When you feel in control speaking in a group, when you’re at ease taking risks and comfortable with the possibility of failure, then you really start to enjoy the journey.

Not everyone is born to speak with authority. Everyone can learn to enjoy it more.

How and why improv works

More confidence, greater creativity, healthier collaboration…

Dr Heather Berlin, a neuroscientist and clinical psychologist. She is a white woman with brown hair, leaning against a wall.

Dr Heather Berlin, Neuroscientist, has proven that improv increases creativity.

A lot of what’s happening in the brain is happening outside our awareness. I’m particularly interested in improvisation; when people are being spontaneously creative. It allows the ‘filter’ to come off so that novel associations are okay.
— Dr Heather A Berlin, Neuroscientist, Clinical Psychologist

Dr Charles Limb, Neuroscientist, has proven that improv inhibits self-censoring.

During improvisation, the brain deactivates the area involved in self-censoring, while cranking up the region linked with self-expression. Essentially, improvisation shuts down inhibitions and lets an inner voice shine through.

Victoria created a fun, out-of-the-box series of experiential workshops for our MSc Management students to explore and develop their presentation skills. The sessions really helped boost my creative thinking and interpersonal confidence under pressure. Coming from an analytical background, these were skills I needed to consciously develop. These skills have since been super-useful to run teams, deal with difficult situations and progress further in my career. I don’t get fazed by much at work any more!
— James C, Senior Director/Founder, Yourself Online
Vic creates a completely safe environment in which to experiment and have fun improving – without the fear of ‘getting it wrong’. A lot of the skills I learned with her are easily transferable, whether to your career or your social life.
— Richard H, Burberry
